June 6th is the annual German day for the visually impaired. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the focus this year is on the special challenges of visually impaired and blind people druing the Corona crisis. According to the WHO, 285 million people worldwide are visually impaired, 39 million of them are blind. In Germany there are more than a million people with a visual impairment. The German Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired initiated the Visually Impaired Day for the first time in 1998. The association published a list of ten tips on how to provide targeted support to people with a visual impairment during these times. Sighted people are invited to support people with a visual impairment in complying with the corona measures and, for example, to point out things that are relevant to everyday life: where is a disinfectant dispenser or where are floor markings to keep the distance in a queue. In addition to more communication, people with a visual impairment also want more serenity and understanding for their situation. Further information and support offers are available here.

The hospital partnerships funding program currently supports seven projects on the subject of eye health, such as the training for ophthamology between the departement of ophthalmology, University of Nairobi, Kenia and the hospital of the University in Munich, Germany or the retina project between the university hospital in Tübingen, Germany and the College of Medicine in Blantyre, Malawi.

Throughout the day and beyond various activities are intended to help attract worldwide attention and encourage people to deal more intensively with the topic in a national context. The theme for the year 2021 will be published on the 7th of April 2021.
