The hospital partnership between Tübingen University Hospital and the Centre de Recherches Médicales de Lembaréné (CERMEL) aims to improve the diagnostic capabilities at CERMEL, as well as develop antimicrobial stewardship strategies at national level in Gabon and in the Congo. Problem: In Gabon and the Congo, no monitoring systems are yet in place for antimicrobial resistance (AMR), although prevalence is high in these regions and although antibiotics can be prescribed without any form of control. The first phase of promotion identified gaps in measures to fight AMR, e.g. limited diagnostic capacities and a lack of antimicrobial stewardship strategies. Main activities: Within the framework of this project, information and management systems, computers and medical equipment (e.g. centrifuges and gas exchange equipment) are to be procured and put in place. Medical staff is also to be trained in collecting samples, producing records and data management. Short-term results: Medical specialists from CERMEL develop their capacities in the fields of diagnostics and AMR. Long-term results: The expertise acquired is to be passed on to colleagues in order to enhance patient safety in Gabon and the Congo in the long term.
