The aim of the project conducted in partnership between the hospital Zeisigwaldklinken Bethanien, Chemnitz, and the Ganta United Methodist Hospital in Liberia is to establish a medical technology centre at the partner hospital in Liberia. Problem: The hospital in Ganta serves about 460,000 people, including patients from Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire. The technical equipment used to treat patients can, however, only be used to a limited extent at the hospital, which lacks the expertise needed to perform essential maintenance and repair work. Main activities: Together, the German and Liberian project partners are establishing a technical medical workshop and fitting it out with new equipment. Further training for technicians and electricians in Liberia are providing the partner side with new staff for the workshop, while hospital staff is being familiarised with the new equipment. Short-term results: The technical medical centre and the assignment of trained staff are to allow the hospital to maintain technical equipment independently. Long-term results: Using existing medical equipment at Ganta United Methodist Hospital helps to ensure a more precise and more rapid diagnosis for patients. The knowledge of proper use of the medical equipment is to be firmly established within a biomedical centre.
