Development of Ultrasound in Eritrea

Health Partnerships – GlobalAnaesthesia, Intensive care and emergency medicine
The partnership project between the Eritrea Hilfswerk in Deutschland e.V. and the Orotta and Halibet Hospital in Asmara aims to improve the use of bedside diagnostic ultrasound in a number of specialist units, especially in emergency care. Problem: Eritrea is suffering a severe shortage of trained doctors and nursing staff in the field of diagnostic ultrasound. Health professionals need expertise in diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasonography, as well as in the maintenance and cleaning, preparing and reprocessing of equipment. Main activities: To improve diagnostic methods, mobile ultrasound units are to be procured. Doctors and nurses are given a detailed introduction to using the equipment and to the hygienic requirements. They are also trained in the indications for and examination procedures and the limitations of diagnostic ultrasound, as well as being trained as multipliers. Short-term results: Advanced training in diagnostic ultrasound should enable doctors and nursing staff to expand their expertise in this area. Long-term results: By training multipliers, the skills acquired are to be passed on to other health professionals, so as to improve the treatment available to patients in Asmara.
