The continuation of the partnership between German Dental Carehood International e.V. and the Peniel Rural College of Education near Madurai, India, aims to provide ongoing training to young Indian women in dental careers. Furthermore, the oral health education of the rural population is to be improved through local education camps in village communities. Background: Tooth decay and paradontal diseases are some of the most common dental problems among the Indian population. However, access to adequate prophylaxis and treatment is not available, especially in rural areas. In this part of India, young women who do not have their own income or regular work also have a low social status. Activities: - Providing further training to young women with difficult socio-economic backgrounds to become dental nurses and technicians with a certified qualification - Organising education camps in rural areas - Establishing a clinical team with mobile units Impact: Providing training to women in dental professions boosts their status in the community and gives them a secure income. At the same time, they act as multipliers for their village communities by carrying out important awareness-raising work in weekly educational camps and schools, and by improving the health of the communities in the long term.
