Cochlear Implantation and Long Time Care of deaf children

Health Partnerships – GlobalEar, nose and throat health
The partnership between the Lehnhardt Stiftung and the National Center of Maternity and Childhood Care in Bishkek aims to ensure the provision of care and long-term support for deaf children in Kyrgyzstan. That is why local experts are to be trained and cochlear implants provided in order to diagnose hearing impairments at an early stage and treat affected children. Background: Each year, around 160 deaf children are born in Kyrgyzstan. If diagnosed early, however, cochlear implants can give deaf children the opportunity to acquire the ability to hear and speak. However, neonatologists and doctors must be trained in how to fit these implants properly. Furthermore, most families in the country are not able to pay for the cost of the required surgery and equipment. Activities: - Implants being carried out by German surgeons in Kyrgyzstan for five days - Providing three-week training sessions in Germany for Kyrgyz surgeons and speech therapists - Acquiring the necessary equipment to conduct audiological screening and carry out analyses - Providing ongoing training on the ground through telehealth measures Impact: The staging of the training courses enables the partner clinic to provide early diagnosis, care and long-term support to deaf children in Kyrgyzstan. Following successful treatment, the opportunities for affected children to integrate into regular nurseries, schools and professional life are significantly improved.
