The partnership between the Ophthalmology Department at Düsseldorf University Hospital and the non-governmental organisation Fundación Visión, Paraguay, is working to introduce a new treatment for keratitis (corneal ectatic disorders and infectious keratitis) in Paraguay. Problem: In countries with a tropical climate in particular, infectious keratitis is one of the main causes of visual impairment. In Paraguay in particular the situation is aggravated by the fact that 90% of the country’s 200 ophthalmologists work in Greater Asunción, and one third of the population have to survive on less than one US dollar a day. For these reasons, many people have no access to ophthalmological care. Main activities: For the new treatment an operational cross-linking unit and the relevant medication will be introduced. Exchanges of experts will take place in addition to further training courses in Paraguay and Düsseldorf, to keep a logbook of and monitor surgical procedures. Then the initial clinical results will be presented at the annual congress of the DOG, the scientific association of ophthalmology in Germany. Short-term results: The new treatment method for keratitis will be established so that doctors and nursing staff can perform the procedure. Long-term results: Treatment of patients with infectious keratitis is to be improved, as is their vision.
