Development of a specific Curriculum regarding NCDs for medical students and clinical officers

Health Partnerships – GlobalNon-communicable diseases
The partnership project between the Philips University Marburg and the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center aims to improve knowledge of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among clinical officers and medical students in northern Tanzania in order to optimize the management of NCDs. Problem: NCDs are occurring in Tanzania more frequently which has been attributed to changes in lifestyle and an aging population. The increasing rates of NCDs challenge the health system as treatment is more expensive. Simultaneously, NCD research and management guidelines for NCD treatment is lacking. Main Activities: A curriculum for the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of NCDs among adults and children should be developed and used for the training of clinical officers and medical students. New diagnostic tests for NCD patients will also be introduced. Short-Term Effects: The implementation of a new curriculum will improve the knowledge of NCD management among clinical officers and doctors. Long-Term Effects: The increased competencies in NCD management will improve the care of affected patients.
