India has an estimated population of 1.3 billion. This yields an estimated 24.5 million births per year and the birth prevalence of clefts is somewhere between 27,000 and 33,000 clefts per year. Inequalities exist, both in access to and quality of cleft care with differences in urban versus rural access and over the years the accumulation of untreated clefts of the lip and palate make this a significant health care problem in India. The cause of clefts is multi factorial. Scudder Memorial Hospital has personnel to function as a comprehensive multidisciplinary team in handling patients with cleft lip and palate. However most of the patients in the area are unable to afford or access health care services as most of the hospitals are located in urban centres and cities.  This project envisions the planning of medical camps and public awareness initiatives to help parents of such children ensure their children with cleft lip/palate and craniofacial anomalies get quality and comprehensive medical services. Scudder Memorial Hospital is strategically located at in the midst of a semi urban/rural area and is easily accessible to the villages and towns in the vicinity. The availability of a complete cleft team in Scudder Memorial Hospital makes it an appropriate Centre to receive comprehensive cleft care. Though most of the surgeries are done at a very affordable cost being a charitable institution, there are many parents who can’t afford even the bare minimum.
