The goal of the Promotion of Women’s Health in Eritrea project, set up by the German organisation For-Eritrea (Medical Support in Partnership) e.V. and the Orotta National Referral Hospital in 2012, is to introduce minimally invasive and oncological surgical techniques in the Eritrean hospital in order to avoid complications after major operations. Another objective is for women who need surgery to be diagnosed early so that they can undergo the appropriate operations. Background: Eritrea does not currently have any pregnancy or cancer screening programmes, with the result that cancer is not diagnosed in patients until a late stage. In addition, the country has a total of just seven gynaecologists, which is why there is a tremendous need for quality training in order to be able to perform the necessary operations on patients. Activities: - Establishing a consultation room in Orotta and at Edaga Hamus Hospital in order to conduct two public consultations a week at each location - Introducing a laparoscopy unit to enable a greater number of minimally invasive procedures - Training the Eritrean doctors in how to perform diagnostic ultrasound scans Impact: The planned introduction of screening programmes for cervical cancer will enable women in Eritrea to receive preventive healthcare for the first time. The introduction of diagnostic methods will improve maternal treatment and reduce perinatal infant mortality in the long term.
