The partnership between the Martin-Luther Universität in Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), Addis Ababa University and the Tikur Anbessa Teaching Hospital in Ethiopia promotes further training in gynaecological oncology and surgical treatment of various cancers in women. Problem: Cancers in women (cervical cancer, ovarian cancer) are one of the three most frequently diagnosed types of cancer in Ethiopia and they are becoming more prevalent. In many regions, patients with low socioeconomic status and a low level of education have no access to diagnosis or treatment. Main activities: Six gynaecological oncologists are receiving specialised training in the form of two exchange visits carried out in Germany and training provided by German professionals in Ethiopia. This training includes exercises in surgical workshops, a log book of surgical interventions, and the monitoring of operations. There are also plans to procure surgical instruments and laparoscopic materials and equipment. In addition, Ethiopian and German partners will attend a gynaecological oncology conference together. Findings will be discussed at this conference. Short-term results: Professionals are to be enabled to specialise in gynaecological oncology. Long-term results: Treatment for women with cancer and the outcomes of that treatment are to be improved and the neglect of women’s cancers in the health system is to be countered.
