The German association kinder unserer welt e. V. has been working with the non-governmental organisation REST - Relief Society of Tigray for many years to promote the health of mothers and children in Korarit and in the Ethiopian region of Tigray. The partnership project aims to establish more structures and capacities in the region, in order to improve the health situation of mothers and children. Problem: Many hospitals in Ethiopia do not have the qualified staff they need, nor the drugs, electricity or medical equipment they require. Many facilities have serious shortcomings in the field of hygiene. Mothers and children in particular are affected by poor nutrition and hygiene, and also suffer as a result of the inadequate prenatal and postnatal care. This is reflected in high rates of maternal and infant mortality. Main activities: Within the scope of the project, capacities are being developed in the field of mother-and-child health at the Zenebesh Health Center and its 16 outpatient clinics. This includes advanced training for 10 medical employees and on-the-job training, the provision of drugs and education measures for the population of the surrounding area covering hygiene, nutrition and ante-natal care. Short-term results: Care for mothers and children in village settings is to be improved. Long-term results: The health situation of mothers and children in the region is sustainably improved.
