The continuation of the partnership project between Shining Eyes e.V. and the St. Mary’s Child and Mother Health Care Centre aims to achieve improved health care for Santal mothers and newborns in India. Background: The Santal people in the area surrounding Bolpur are hesitant about leaving their villages to access health care services. This results in illnesses being left undiagnosed and adverse health effects in newborns remaining unidentified. As infant mortality is particularly high in the first two months after birth, preventive measures are essential in averting developmental deficits in children. Activities: - Performing check-ups on newborns, by German and local paediatricians - Providing training to social workers and staff at health care institutions - Reporting on the activities in the villages in order to come up with long-term strategies for solutions Impact: By introducing preventive medical check-ups, developmental deficits can be detected at an early stage and infant mortality reduced in the long term. The establishment of preventive health counselling in the villages aims to make mothers more aware of their own wellbeing and the health of their children in the long term.
