Training of Colorectal Surgeons in Ulan Bataar Mongolia

Health Partnerships – GlobalSurgery

The aim of the partnership between the Franziskus-Hospital Harderberg and the Centre for Coloproctology at the First Central Hospital in Ulan Bator is to provide training to surgeons in operative techniques for treating bowel diseases with the aim of improving patient care in Mongolia.

Background: As the First Central Hospital in the capital city of Ulan Bator is the country’s largest health centre, it plays a key role in the health care of the Mongolian people. However, it lacks the standardised processes and expertise to ensure that patients with bowel diseases are given adequate care.

Activities:

- Temporary placement in Ulan Bator of German partners to support the training of surgeons in operative techniques for treating bowel diseases

- Optimising perioperative process management through training sessions

- Temporary placement of Mongolian partners at partner clinics in Germany for specialist training

Impact: The training of surgeons guarantees the expansion of the Centre for Coloproctology and is designed to optimise the level of treatment for patients. The long-term goal is to provide the population with improved health care on a sustainable basis.
