The aim of the assisted partnership project between Heidelberg University Hospital and University of Gondar Hospital in Ethiopia is to set up a treatment centre for cervical cancer at the gynaecology department of the partner university. This is the leading department in the region in moves to roll out screening procedures. Problem: Cervical cancer is the most frequent cancer-related cause of death among women in Ethiopia. The country has too few specialised staff and lacks medical equipment for examinations, diagnosis and treatment. Main activities: Four gynaecologists will undergo several weeks of training at specialist centres in Germany. Once the treatment centre is established at the partner hospital, the project partners will consult on abnormal results, thus continuing the knowledge exchange. German partners will also visit Gondar to conduct training. Short-term results: More patients in the partner hospital are treated successfully. Long-term results: The treatment methods communicated by the project are to be integrated in the health system. The nationwide introduction of the new methods is to enable more women across Ethiopia to survive cervical cancer.
