The partnership between the Medical Education and Training for Africa e.V. and the Orotta National Referral Hospital as well as the Edaga Hamus Community Hospital in the capital of Asmara targets the training of midwives and delivery nurses. Problem: The stillbirth rate and neonatal mortality rate remains high in Eritrea. There is also little reliable data concerning the rate of maternal deaths in the six-weeks following delivery. Due to a limited number of Eritrean delivery specialists and midwives, the continued education and training of midwives and assistants required to improve the situation cannot be successfully carried-out. Main Activities: Within the partnership, Eritrean midwives and delivery nurses should be educated through lectures and technical practice on ultrasound techniques, performing newborn examinations, and newborn reanimation. The obtained knowledge will be strengthened through mentored visits. Short-Term Effects: The training and further education of midwives will lead to the improvement of mother and newborn care. Long-Term Effects: The improved training and further education of medical personnel in delivery medicine will reduce mortality rates among mothers and newborns in Eritrea.
