The partnership between the Klinikum Neumarkt and the Salima District Hospital in Malawi is fostering improved health care by providing basic and further training in the form of e-learning and staff exchanges. Problem: The limited access to health services of an appropriate quality in Malawi means that parts of the population are seriously underserved in terms of medical care. Above all there is a lack of ways of preventing conditions such as cervical cancer, as well as for their early diagnosis and treatment. Main activities: The project has identified a number of focus areas for the next few years. Further training for medical staff aims to raise the number of medical professionals in gynaecological and surgical units. Regular screening is to be established for early detection of cervical cancer and to improve surgical treatment and peri-operative care for women with cervical cancer. Short-term results: Cancer screening and early detection of cervical cancer are improved. At the same time hygiene standards and patient safety at the hospital are enhanced. Long-term results: The aim is to reduce the incidence of cervical cancer and increase the survival rate following diagnosis of cancer.
