Safe Motherhood at Endulen Hospital

Health Partnerships – GlobalMother and child health
The cooperation arrangement between the Germany-based association Endulen e.V. - Trage es im Herzen mit! and Endulen Hospital in Tanzania is endeavouring to improve health care for mothers and children in the north of Tanzania. Problem: Endulen Hospital in the north of Tanzania is the only hospital serving around 80,000 people. The poor health care in the region means that many mothers and children are still dying of treatable infections or complications during childbirth that are identified too late. Main activities: Midwives from the region are trained in maternal and child health. Young girls are educated in female hygiene and family planning. The workshops are to reach a minimum of 80 midwives and several hundred young girls and women every year. Existing solar plants are also to be enhanced so that incubators, oxygen equipment and the operating theatre can be run better and for longer periods. Short-term results: Midwives are to be enabled to recognise complications during childbirth at an early stage, and to weigh up when a doctor must be called or an expectant mother taken to hospital. Young girls and women can take charge of their own health and of family planning. A better power supply for the hospital will make it possible to perform more life-saving surgery. Long-term results: Health care for mothers and children in the region is to be improved.
