The German NGO Difäm is running an international cooperation project for paediatric emergency medicine in Guinea and Liberia, in partnership with the non-profit association PAEDSIM e.V. Cooperation aims to enhance the management of emergencies affecting newborns and infants in Yomou Prefecture. Problem: The neonatal and infant mortality rate is extremely high in Yomou Prefecture. One particularly difficult area is neonatal resuscitation, which has repeatedly been identified as a weak point. In general, there is a shortfall of the specific skills and equipment that would be needed to provide appropriate neonatal and infant care, and to respond to emergencies. Main activities: Experts at PAEDSIM e.V. are to train a pool of trainers for neonatal resuscitation and the management of paediatric emergencies. Guinean health professionals are to receive further training from experts in the fields of intensive care nursing and paediatrics, which will take the form of theoretical and practical units. Technical advisory services on dealing with emergencies will also be provided. Short-term results: Capacity development measures are to hone specialist skills in the field of neonatal and infant care in partner facilities. The neonatal and infant mortality rates are to be reduced. Long-term results: By establishing pools of trainers, the foundations are to be laid for long-term capacity development in neonatal resuscitation and emergency care.
