Health Partnerships – GlobalOrthopaedics
The assisted partnership project between the Katholisches Klinikum Koblenz-Montabaur gGmbH and the National Orthopaedic Hospital, in Enugu in south-eastern Nigeria, was launched in order to improve medical care for polio patients in Nigeria. Problem: In Nigeria, as a result of their paralysis people with polio have few opportunities to participate in working and social life. They have little access to adequate physiotherapy or orthopaedic aids. Main activities: Training is held and Nigerian doctors, therapists and technicians from the orthopaedic workshop at the partner hospital undertake on-site visits in Germany. Tele-diagnosis provides for an exchange of knowledge between the two hospitals. In partnership-based cooperation, an internet platform is being set up to gather donations for orthopaedic aids. Short-term results: The care available to polio patients at the partner hospital is enhanced. Long-term results: The newly acquired knowledge is to be transferred to other regions of Nigeria. The polio centre at the Katholisches Klinikum Koblenz-Montabaur analyses the high numbers of people who have contracted polio in Enugu to generate new findings. The care available to patients with polio in both countries is to be improved for a sustained period.
