The partnership between the Klinikum Westbrandenburg and the National Centre of Maternity and Childhood Care in Kyrgyzstan is supporting the establishment of a Kyrgyz perinatal centre in Bishkek. Problem: Compared to other countries, the mortality and morbidity rates among premature babies and newborn infants in Kyrgyzstan is comparatively high. Morbidity, in terms of serious brain damage, lung or eye conditions, can be a result of premature birth. There is a need for training in treating newborn infants and premature babies, as well as a need for available equipment. Main activities: Visits by Kyrgyz health professionals (doctors, nurses and technical staff) to the German hospital in order to give them an understanding of everyday work in a new perinatal centre. German partners are to visit Bishkek to provide structured further and advanced training. Ultrasound equipment is also to be procured for treatment purposes. Short-term results: Knowledge is to be communicated about everyday medical work in a modern perinatal centre, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic capacities improved for premature babies and newborn infants. Long-term results: Regular work procedures and standardised patient care are to be achieved at the new perinatal centre, and both mortality and morbidity among premature babies and newborn infants are to be reduced.
