Professionalisation of Emergency Care in Kampala/Uganda (Lubaga Hospital)

Health Partnerships – GlobalAnaesthesia, Intensive care and emergency medicine
The partnership between the Malteser Krankenhaus Seliger Gerhard in Bonn and the Uganda Martyrs Hospital in Lubaga aims to reduce mortality and invalidity in the wake of medical emergencies Problem: In Uganda, the consistent emergency care that is so urgently needed is not guaranteed. This is partly because the under-funded public health system is stretched to the limit and has only a very short list of priorities. Studies indicate that the medical rescue service could significantly reduce mortality. Main activities: Within the scope of the partnership there are plans to train nursing staff and doctors. Regular training is to be put in place for resuscitation measures and other emergency activities. On-the-job support for staff following this training and a two-month visit to Germany for the partner side are also planned. Short-term results: Basic and advanced training for accident and emergency specialists is to ensure better patient care. Long-term results: Standard operating procedures are to be integrated in order to guarantee safe patient care.
