The partnership between the Fürst-Stirum-Klinik (FSK) in Bruchsal, Germany, and the regional hospital in Labé, Guinea, serves to share knowledge about modern surgical procedures and provide advanced training for medical staff in Guinea. The regional hospital is also to be fitted out with modern medical equipment. Problem: In Guinea there is a lack of both state and private funding that would improve the health situation of the population of Labé. The national health plan provides for the introduction of ultrasound-assisted diagnosis, particularly in emergencies. The methods currently in use to treat inguinal and hiatal hernias result in a recurrence rate of between 20 and 40%. Main activities: Dialogue and advance training opportunities for local medical staff take place. In addition to the training in ultrasound diagnosis, new ultrasound equipment is to be procured and integrated into everyday procedures. Surgical correction of abdominal hernias is to be improved by providing training in surgical methods. Short-term results: Ultrasound diagnosis is to be used more frequently in emergency situations and medical staff trained in hernia surgery. Long-term results: The recurrence rate following hernia surgery is to be reduced and hygiene standards improved.
