Standardized treatment algorithms for acute and emergency hospital care in Nkhotakota

Health Partnerships – GlobalInternal Medicine
The aim of the partnership project between the University of Freiburg and the Nkhotakota District Hospital is to develop standardised treatment pathways for hospital care in Nkhotakota, Malawi. In order to achieve this, a comprehensive analysis of current diagnostic and therapeutic strategies is to be drawn up in order to use the available resources more effectively in future. Background: The Nkhotakota District Hospital does not have enough medical equipment or qualified experts. The experts often have insufficient training and they lack experience. The lack of standardised treatment procedures has an impact on the quality of the health services provided. Activities: - Identifying key areas in which standardised treatment procedures lead to improved treatment - Preparing treatment algorithms in the identified areas, taking into account the resources available - Introducing and providing training in the revised treatment strategies across the whole medical team Impact: The developed treatment guidelines and different diagnosis and treatment methods optimise the hospital’s workflow and can be used in the long term at other health care institutions throughout Malawi.
