Tübingen-Blanytre Retina Project

Health Partnerships – GlobalEye health
The partnership between the University Eye Hospital Tübingen and the College of Medicine Ophthalmology Unit in Blanytre, Malawi aims to establish minimally invasive surgery for retinal detachment in Malawi. Problem: Retinal detachment is a serious eye disease, which can lead to blindness without proper intervention. In Malawi, neither the adequate medical equipment nor health personnel with experience in retinal detachment therapies are currently available. Main Activities: During this project, an available Cryomachine will be made functional and the health personnel will be trained in its application. Malawian doctors also learn how to perform retinal detachment surgery through theoretical and practical courses. This will then be strengthened through observations made at the University Eye Hospital Tübingen. Short-Term Effects: The establishment of retinal surgery will optimize the treatment of affected patients. Long-Term Effects: The knowledge exchange and improved training opportunities will allow the field of eye surgery to be more attractive and thus the care of ophthalmology patients will be sustainably improved.
