The project objective of the partnership between the Klinikum der Universität München and the Ayder Referral Hospital at Mekelle University in Ethiopia is to improve the implementation of treatment standards in the cardiology intensive care unit for children. With the help of training sessions, it aims to ensure that patients with heart conditions receive better intensive medical care. Background: Approximately 60 per cent of the Ethiopian population is under the age of 21. Congenital heart defects are one of the most common malformations in children in Ethiopia, yet the country is yet to establish a children’s heart centre. The Ayder Referral Hospital has, however, used donations to set up a heart catheter laboratory. There is currently still a lack of expertise for the unit to be used adequately for children, particularly those with heart conditions. Activities: - Creating relevant standard procedures - Creating a database to analyse clinical pictures - Providing training units and simulations with scenarios - Managing the children’s intensive care unit using the established standard procedures Impact: By optimising the management as well as the implementation of standard procedures regarding the most common clinical pictures, treatment is to be enhanced and, with the aid of a database, analysed and continuously improved. The aim of this is to reduce the complication rate and mortality of the affected patients in Ethiopia in the long term.
