The partnership project between the German Leprosy and TB Relief Association and St. Joseph´s Hospital Maracha in Uganda is designed to boost the quality of health care at the partner hospital. Problem: In rural parts of Uganda in particular, shortfalls in medical care and malnutrition result in permanent physical impairment. Physical disabilities can have serious consequences: Affected individuals have limited access to education and employment, and cannot fully participate within their community. Main activities: Medical professionals from partner hospitals and the surrounding region attend further training in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases. In the courses, participants are trained to prevent lasting impairments through early detection and appropriate treatment for high-risk patients, as well as providing medical care for physical impairments. Short-term results: Training for hospital staff enables them to identify high-risk patients earlier on and to prevent lasting secondary damage by using more efficient treatment methods. The result is better-quality treatment for patients already living with impairments. Long-term results: Targeted education on prevention and treatment options will enable villagers to prevent secondary damage from diseases.
