Enhancing abilities through psychosocial support

Health Partnerships – GlobalRehabilitation
The continuation of the hospital partnership between the German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Relief Association (DAHW) and St. Joseph’s Hospital Maracha aims to provide people with disabilities in Maracha District, Uganda, with holistic support. The psychosocial support is to be improved by having assistants act as points of contact for people with disabilities, their carers and the wider community, so that mental illness can be detected at an early stage. Background: Uganda is home to around 4.9 million people with disabilities. However, only a handful of these people have access to rehabilitation services. As part of the first partnership project, St. Joseph’s Hospital Maracha trained community nurses and village health teams in how to provide basic community health services. Physical and mental rehabilitation are now to be incorporated into the services. Activities: - Providing training to 12 participants as reference persons for psychosocial support - Holding a two-day refresher training course for 15 community nurses from the first project phase - Providing psychosocial support activities and promoting self-help groups in selected communities Impact: The development of psychosocial capacities in the health care system aims to improve in the long term the care given to people with disabilities. The partnership is also designed to raise awareness among people living in the surrounding area of psychosocial illnesses.
