Improving laboratory capacity for breast cancer diagnostics

Health Partnerships – GlobalOncology
The continuation of the hospital partnership between the Faculty of Medicine of the Martin Luther University and Addis Ababa University aims to improve laboratory diagnostics for breast cancer in the Ethiopian capital. That is why molecular diagnostics is to be implemented at the university’s Institute of Microbiology as it is an essential component of diagnostic clarification for decisions regarding treatment. Background: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in Ethiopia, yet the country has only one oncological centre. The challenge is that some of the laboratory facilities are equipped, but the equipment is not used by the staff on a daily basis. As a result, there is a need to provide aspiring doctors and laboratory technicians with training in order to improve laboratory diagnostics. Activities: - Providing one week of practical laboratory training at the Institute of Microbiology to two senior technicians and three senior members of staff. - Providing training to three members of laboratory staff in Germany - Having the laboratory evaluated by senior staff from the Martin Luther University - Holding a dissemination workshop with laboratory and clinic staff Impact: Affected patients are given a more reliable diagnosis thanks to improved laboratory diagnostics. In the long term, the aim is for quality assurance to lead to improved cancer care and a reduced mortality rate.
