The continuation of the partnership between the Eichsfeld Klinikum and the Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital is based on providing specialist further training for doctors in the fields of gynaecology, neonatology and anaesthesia, with the aim of enhancing the quality of medical care in the Ethiopian city of Harar. Background: The Hiwot Fana Specialized University Hospital serves as a referral hospital for the 1.5 million people living in the entire eastern region of Ethiopia. However, the hospital does not have sufficient medical equipment or a solid base of expertise as specialist medical training was only established in Ethiopia a few years ago. Activities: - Preparing and implementing obstetrics guidelines, including practical seminars on neonatal care - Establishing structured working procedures on the neonatal intensive care unit - Implementing a training plan for oncological operations and supporting trainees using logbooks Impact: By implementing guidelines, optimised work processes and training courses, areas of responsibility for the different medical occupational groups are defined in order to improve the support and care given to women with high-risk pregnancies, women in labour and newborns in the long term. The practical teaching of surgical techniques is designed to professionalise everyday work processes, with the aim of bringing about a sustainable improvement in the general quality of care for patients in hospital.
