The partnership between the Medical Faculty of Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg and the Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG) aims to improve the care available to women in Ethiopia with gynaecological cancers. Problem: In Ethiopia ovarian and cervical cancer are two of the three most common types of cancer, but there are few doctors in Ethiopia specialising in these conditions. This lack of specialists is one reason why many women die of gynaecological cancer. Main activities: To improve medical care for affected women, Ethiopian doctors are receiving advanced training in Germany in the diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological cancer. Within the scope of several workshops, treatment guidelines and a curriculum for gynaecological oncology are to be elaborated and subsequently established. Short-term results: Training for gynaecologists is to increase the number of doctors specialising in the field of gynaecological oncology and thus give women access to this care. Long-term results: The partnership is to help diagnose and treat cancer in Ethiopian women at an earlier stage.
