The partnership between the German association Afrika Kulturinstitut e.V. and the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital in Pedu, Ghana, is promoting the establishment of a training centre for sonography/endoscopy at the teaching hospital in Pedu to strengthen Ghana’s health system. Problem: Ghana has very few cardiologists and gastroenterologists, which means that many people cannot be examined or treated. Abdominal and cardiovascular complaints, along with liver and pancreatic cancer are often diagnosed only very late. Because of the distances involved, many people cannot use the country’s hospitals. Main activities: An ultrasound unit is to be procured and courses lasting several days held for local staff in the use of the equipment. Other training units then provide an opportunity to put into practice what has been learned. Short-term results: Trained regional staff offer ultrasound examinations at the teaching hospital. Long-term results: Early detection and treatment of diseases which might otherwise have been fatal, become possible. Treatable cardiovascular diseases are no longer to render individuals unfit to work.
