What do we fund?

The University and Hospital Partnerships in Africa funding programme supports capacity development partnerships between health organisations in Germany and in Africa – currently on the topic of ehealth.

What do we want to achieve?

In the current eHealth phase, the University and Hospital Partnerships will contribute to improving patient care in selected African countries through innovative digital applications.

Who can apply?

The programme University and Hospital partnerships in Africa promotes public and non-profit institutions (colleges, universities, university clinics, teaching hospitals and research institutes in Germany) and institutions in the secondary together with tertiary care structure in African countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

What kind of support do we provide?

Joint projects on the subject of ehealth are funded with up to 300,000 Euros over a maximum period of 22 months. Funding is available for: Personnel costs, external experts/consultants, travel/transport costs, event costs, procurement of material goods, consumables, administrative overheads and small amounts for operational research.

How much funding is available for projects and for how long?

At present, up to EUR 300,000 is available to partnerships intended to promote ehealth.

Are there any regional restrictions on the funding?

Yes, the funding is restricted to countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Can a research project be financed?

Yes, a small amount of the funding applied for can be used for operational research. A detailed list of the costs that can be covered by our funding programmes can be found here.

When does the next round of funding start?

Invitations to apply to the University and Hospital Partnerships in Africa are usually issued every three years.

Who can be a partner in Africa?

Each partnership must include at least one sub-Saharan African organisation active in the secondary or tertiary level of healthcare, such as a university hospital, teaching hospital or referral hospital. Additional German or African partner institutions may also be involved.

Who can apply for funding?

German public-sector and public-benefit health organisations, federal institutes and research institutions can apply to the University and Hospital Partnerships in Africa programme for funding for their partnership project. The German partner is the official applicant, and if the application is successful the German partner will also be the contracting partner for the funding.

For what purposes is funding available?

You can apply to the University and Hospital Partnerships in Africa programme for funding to cover project trips, training costs, materials and equipment, and administrative costs. In addition, a limited amount of funding is available to cover staff costs and accompanying research. A detailed list of the costs that can be covered by our funding programmes can be found here.
